* * * Rugby School More than 160 Rugby players, comprising many of Auckland’s AU Blacks, representative flayers and prominent club junior and secondary school players, have been nominated for the Auckland Rugby Union’s summer training school. The school will start on February 2. From about 110 nominations last year 80 players took part in the training. The coaching panel has not yet been completed but it will contain a large number of former All Blacks, local coaches and physical training instructors. ❖ ❖ Jj: Outstanding Bowling Two 13-year-old Otahuhu College right-hand spin bowlers, I. Perrott and J. Cardis, recorded phenomenal bowling figures playing for Otahuhu during a recent match against Howick. In Howick’s first innings Perrott took eight wickets for no runs from 26 balls. In the second innings he took a further four wickets for three runs to give him a match average of 12 wickets for 3 runs. After taking one wicket for two runs in the Howick first innings. Cardis took five for one from nine balls in the second innings to give him an average of seven for three. ❖ sis sje Irwin In Hospital

The All Black front row forward and Olympic rowing trialist M. W. Irwin, is back in the Dunedin Public Hospital. Recently Irwin had a cartilage removed from a knee he injured during the last Rugby season and he has now had the other cartilage in the same joint removed. The second operation was a success and Irwin will be able to continue his Rugby career. The All Black full-back, D. B. Clarke, had both cartilages removed from a knee without any ill effects and subsequently toured Australia this year with a New Zealand team. ❖ ❖ ❖ Home Runs

Although home runs are not rare in softball they are not numerous especially in the senior men’s grades where the standard of pitching is at it’s best. Last Saturday’s game between Christchurch Combined and Richmond produced four home runs, two of them in one innings, one player securing two for the game. M. McKinnon and B. Lapthorne hit home runs in the opening innings of the game for the Combined side and this was followed by a long hit by N. Shuker for Linwood. Up to the stage where Shuker hit his home run he had concentrated on short bunts and his powerful hit came as a complete surprise. In Combined’s fifth innings McKinnon connected and scored his second home run to set a season’s record which will be hard to equal. ❖ * * Junior Tennis Important changes in the organisation of the Slazenger and Howe Shield lawn tennis competitions for provincial junior teams this season are that Hutt Valley will play in zone C (last season zone B) and Taranaki will play in

zone B (last season zone C). In the Slazenger Shield last season Hutt Valley reached the semifinals but was eliminated by Auckland at Wilding Park. The zone’s this seasori are:—A, Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty; B. Poverty Bay, Hawke’s Bay, Wanganui, Manawatu, Taranaki; C, Hutt Valley, Wellington, Wairarapa, Nelson; D, Canterbury, South Canterbury North Otago, Otago, Southland. First and second rounds in zones will be played on December 13 and 14. * * * Paddle Boards Members of the South Brighton Surf Club have recently built Australian style “paddle boards” which are narrower and shorter than surf-skis. The boards are hollow and if sufficient are built by other clubs a competition may be started soon. ❖ Q * The Metric System Auckland’s athletes are gaining early competition over metric distances in the Western Suburbs Amateur Athletic Club’s metric meeting. A two-day programme will be the full Olympic one except for the steeplechase. There are senior and junior races for all events up to 1500 metres, but the fields will be combined for the throwing events. An indication of the popularity of the meeting is that there were 30 entries for the broad jump.
