NEW BAUXITE FIELD
Australia Starts Security Check (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright! (Rec. 7 p.m) MELBOURNE, December 2. Commonwealth security officers are screening workers on the huge new bauxite field being developed at Weipa, on Cape York Peninsula, the Melbourne "Sun News Pictorial” said today. Security interest in the field, which has a big war-time potential, follows the issue of a comprehensive report on the field by two Australian unionists claimed to be Communists and the reported sighting of a foreign submarine at Port Musgrave on Cape York Peninsula near the Weipa field. The report on the field, the newspaper said, was made to a recent meeting of the Communist party in Sydney. It ddals largely with alleged exploitation of natives, but there is extensive reference to the progress of drilling and development of the field The submarine was sighted from the Mapoon Mission Station, which is run by the Presbyterian Church. The Navy Minister, Mr Charles Davidson, said in Brisbane on Saturday that reports of foreign submarine sightings in the Cape York Peninsula had been "thoroughly investigated” but nothing had been discovered to suggest that the reports were authentic.
