Life-Saving NEW CANOE USED

Taylor’s Mistake Club For the first time in more than three years members of the Taylor s Mistake Surf Life-saving Club paddled their own surf canoe out into a heavy surf at Taylor’s Mistake on Sunday morning. Another canoe owned by the club was stolen from the bay. When the pavilion was gutted by fire more than three years ago the canoe was parked on nearby sandhills. It was there for several months. One night it was stolen. The canoe was next reported to have been seen at the mouth of the Styx river more than three months later. The police investigated, but the canoe was gone when they got there. It has not been heard of since. A spokesman for the club (Mr B. Russell) said that the only way the canoe could have been removed from Taylor's Mistake was by several persons with a truck. The canoe weighed about 2’,icwt. The new canoe cost nearly £lOO and is a little more than 18 feet long. It is covered with canvas. There are now six surf canoes among local surf clubs. The Sumner Surf Life-saving Club has the only fibre-glass canoe in Canterbury. At yesterday's trial the senior members of the Taylor's Mistake Club who took the canoe out said that it had behaved very well considering the difficult conditions, and their lack of experience with it. The canoe will be raced at the first surf carnival of the season which is expected to be held in the next week or two.
