Magistrate’s Court Two Years’ Probation For Assault At Kaikoura

Motutapu Waere, aged 26, a railway bridgeman, who last week admitted charges of assaulting two railwaymen at Kaikoura and presenting firearms at them, was admitted to probation for two years when he appeared f .°J‘ sente nce before Mr Rex C Abernethy, S.M., in the Magistrate s Court yesterday. CARGO THEFT A 32-year-old railway shunter. Alister Aynsjey Hamilton, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a pair of sandals valued at 355. Senior-Detective-Sergeant G. C. Urquhart said that the sandals were part of the cargo of the Bristol Freighter which crashed at the Russley golf links on November 21. Hamilton was convicted and fined £lO. Suppression of his name was refused. Senior - Detective - Sergeant Urquhart said that several hundred pairs of sandals from the cargo of the aircraft had been taken to C shed at the Railway vards for sorting. Reardon said that at 8.50 p.m. on Saturday accused was seen in Galvin’s shop at New Brighton. Eight children, whose ages ranged from two months to 12 years, were burned to death early today when a house was destroyed by fire at Sherbrooke, about 100 miles east of Montreal. When the firemen arrived it was too late to check the fire, which was fanned by strong winds. The mother and another child, Robert, aged 13, were at church when the fire started.
