CHRISTMAS MAIL
Rush Not Expected Till Monday Although the "Post Early for Christmas” post mark has been used by the Chief Post Office for about two weeks, the impact of the Christmas mail has not vet been felt by the staff, and the rush is not expected to begin until next M °nday, according to Post Office officials. From that day extra staff, inJn U S ,ng I® full-time postmen and 58 boys, will be employed on the delivery side. In addition 12 girls will be employed facing up letters for the postmarking machine during the day. and eight students will carry out this work in a night shift from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m The usual spate of letters addressed to Father Christmas has been received, the first of which was posted in August. In keeping with International Geophysical Year operations the vast majority bear a South Pole address, including one addressed to “Father Christmas, c/o. Deep Freeze Expedition. Little America. Antarctica.” Although very few of the letters are stamped, all are sent forward to the Chief Post Office, Wellington and when possible. acknowledged. Latest closing dates for overseas Christmas mail are Britain. December 10. 2 p.m.; United States. December 12. 2 p.m.; Australia. December 20. 2 p.m.
