RACING Easy Win For Her Ex In Omoto Main Race

(From Our Own Reporter)

GREYMOUTH, December 2.

Her Ex, a last start sixth in the New Zealand Oaks at Riccarton, gave none of her nine opponents a chance over the concluding stages of the Hannan Memorial Handicap, the principal event and first leg of the double on the first day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Omoto today.

Her only challenger in the run in was the Washdyke-trained mare, Desert Cloud, which made a game effort to bridge the gap to Mr 1,. B. C. Macfarlane’s Gabador filly, but found the task beyond her.

E. G. Low, who had won the previous race on Meteorologist.

had Her Ex close to the pacemaking Jessie James, with five furlongs and a half to run, and kept her in that position until the field had passed the three furlongs, when she drew out to have a comfortable lead at the straight. Over the concluding stages she had only to be kept going to win decisively. Success in the second leg went to the locally-trained Seascrape, which beat another locally-trained runner, Stentor. Cruising, the favourite and off-course substitute, was right up third, just shading Arctic Sun. In a total double pool of £30,282, Her Ex, a strong favourite for the first leg, carried 13,422 10s units. The holders of 3554 5s tickets, 103 on-course, received a double dividend of £2B 3s for £l. The meeting opened in showery weather, but the rain soon passed, and most of the programme was held under pleasant conditions. The track provided good footing. A good attendance invested £12.736 10s on-course, including £lBBB on the double, compared with £12,076 last year, when the first day was held on a Saturday. Hannan Memorial Royal Voyage failed t > move off with the field for the Hannan Memorial Handicap, and lost at least 100 yards Jesse James began best from the ins.de and led on to the course proper by a length and a half from Her Ex and Beau Revere, with Sumner and Desert Cloud next, ahead of Peter Bruce, Litmus, and Chellene, which were at length intervals, clear of County Fermanagh.

Leaving the straight, Her Ex moved up to be on the girth of Jesse James, with Beau Revere trailing, ahead of Desert Cloud and Sumner. At the three furHer Ex, on the outer, was shading Jesse James, and half a furlong later she went into a clear lead by three lengths. At this stage Desert Cloud had moved forward to trail just ahead of the tiring Jesse James, with Chellene improving her position on the outer.

Her Ex maintained her lead into the straight, and over the concluding stages was not extended to beat Desert Cloud by four lengths, with Chellene three lengths further back, two lengths H*. Front of County Fermanagh. There was a gap then to Beau Revere and Litmus, two lengths to Jesse James and Sumner, and a long gap to Royal Voyage and Peter Bruce. The Second Leg The top-weight, Seascrape, gained a good win in the second leg of the double, the Metropolitan Hack Handicap. R. J. Blair had » e .T lde S a ?? Belding in the middle °f the field until the half-mile, he made a forward move to follow Arctic Sun, Stentor, and the favourite. Cruising, into line. He took charge at the furlong, and ran the race out strongly to win by a length and a quarter from Stentor, which beat Cruising for second by a head, with Arctic Sun a nose back fourth. Arctic Sun and Stentor were the co-pacemakers from the half-mile to the straight, but Cruising drifted badly in the middle stages and had to be hard ridden to get back to a handy position. Meteorologist was handy to the turn, but was feeling the strain soon after and drifted to be a poor fifth, well clear of King's Gold and Goldtina, which were both slow away. Trainer’s Second Win

Tonka gave the Omoto trainer, C. J. Walsh, and W. D. Skelton, their second success of the day when he ran on strongly to beat the place favourite. Lucky Time, by a length and a half in the Otira Hack Handicap. The win favourite. Shame was half a length back third, six lengths ahead of Zami Lyn, with Vulcanian, the only other starter, beaten right off. Shame, Tonka, and Vulcanian raced in line for the first halffurlong, where Shame pulled her way to the front On the turn out of the straight Shame moved off the fence and W. D. Skelton forced Tonka through the gap into the lead racing to the half-mile. There Lucky Time, which did not appear to be handling the conditions well, was five lengths behind Shame, with a similar marein to Zami Lyn and Pulcanian, drifting right out.

Racing to the straight Tonka still had charge by a length and a half from Shame, with Lucky Time, improving rapidly, also handy. Although she did not. look likely to catch Tonka in the run in, Lucky Time finished solidly to take second place from Shame. Top Weight in Form Arabian Stream carried top weight to a convincing win in the Flying Hack Handicap, beating the Riccarton-trained Amenity by three lengths. Arabian Stream shared the trail with Legalise behind the pacemaking Queenship until the half-mile, and then raced into a clear lead on the turn. He maintained his advantage until the end. Amenity, which had followed the winner into line, could make no impression over the concluding stages, but held second place easily, two lengths ahead of the little-fancied Fairy Whispers, which made up ground. Arrow Royal was running on for fourth, but was five lengths from Fairy Whispers and half a length in front of Come on Boy. There was a gap to Royal Vai. and another to Queenship, with Legalise and Skyrain at the rear. Narrow Win After a dour struggle over the final furlong of the Stewards' Hack Handicap, Meteorologist, which had shared the pace with

Shame over the last three furlongs, beat the latter in a photofinish by half a head. They had the finish to themselves, the topweight, Rising High, being four lengths back third. There was half a length to Zami Lyn, two lengths to Ration Time, and a length to the favourite, Marcoette, at the rear. Marcoette began best, but at the end of two furlongs Shame had pulled her way to the front from Rising High and Meteorologist, with Marcoette next In a gap ahead of Zami Lyn, with Ration Time, which had dwelt at the start, four lengths further back. They raced in the same order to the three furlongs, where Meteorologist moved forward to join Shame in the lead. These two were still on terms at the straight entrance, and over the final furlong drew out Division Race Buckles began best in the first division of the Novice Stakes, and after sharing the pace with the favourite, Stentor, to the furlong, fought on best to win by half a length. Stentor was five lengths clear of Robes, which could not come on after following the first two into line.

Arachis, which had improved from the half-mile to be fifth into line, ran on for fourth half a length behind Robes. The others, which were beaten off, were headed by Hurry Along and Michaelo. Kuts and Ruby Milling were very slow away, and Salmiranda swung around at the start and took no part. Jack’s Folly succeeded in leading throughout the second division .and won decisively by eight lengths from Super View. The last-named trailed through-

out and beat Air Bank by a neck for second, with a similar margin to Fickle Jade, which finished on after running wide on the home turn. Heathcliff was , three lengths back fifth, well clear of Lady Rousell, which headed the rest.

Blue Peri and Pippin Zeal, which both gave trouble at the start, were not in line when the field was sent away.
