Atka Helicopter Crashes On Deck
LITTLE AMERICA, Dec. 2. A helicopter, taking off from the United States Navy icebreaker, Atka, crashed and burned on the deck yesterday, injuring three Navy men, the United Press reported. The Atka and the larger icebreaker, Glacier, were smashing their way through 6ft thick harbour ice in Kainan Bay to unload the first supplies and replacement staff to reach the Antarctic by ship this year for the United States units which wintered there.
The helicopter was transferring men connected with the icebreaking job between the ships and from the ships to the shore. The injuries were not serious.
