DUKE OPENS PIER
Wartime Rescue Recalled (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 19 The Duke of Edinburgh opened a £200,000, 300 ft pier at Deal. Kent, today to replace the one blown up as part of Britain’s antiinvasion plans in 1940. The Duke said: “I find that 1 have a link with Deal. I helped to rescue your piermaster.” According to the “Daily Express.” the Duke said to the piermaster, Captain Arthur Harris: “Yes. I remember you.” Later Captain Harris said: “I was first officer in a tanker blown up by a mine in the Thames approaches in April, 1943. Our cargo was petroleum jelly, which was kept liquefied by the boilers. “As the tanker broke in two. petroleum jelly poured out and solidified in a layer sft thick on top of the waves. “As I rowed through the water a destroyer came along. A fairhaired lieutenant helped us up the scramble nets. “He said: ‘Salvage money would 'be useful ashore.’ i “Later I asked who he was. I was told ‘Lieutenant Philip'.”
