ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Sheep And Cattle Values Decline Sharply

Prices for fat sheep and fat cattle were much easier at Addington market yesterday. With an absence of competition from export buyers, fat ewes were back by up to 15s a head and wethers, which were in oversupply, were cheaper by as much as 12s 6d. Fat steers eased by £3 and more a head and fat heifers and good butchers’ cows were down by £2. Fat hoggets, which were again j’arded in considerable numbers, were 5s to 6s easier at the start of the sale and later there was a further decline in some cases. Fat lambs eased to schedule rates. Though there was a sizeable offering of store sheep the sale was still a sound one, though wether hoggets were a little easier.

STORE SHEEP In the store sheep section there was a very heavy yarding of hoggets and in the light of these numbers the sale was a good one, though wether hoggets were a little easier. The offering totalled 5156 head, compared with 4406 last week, and it included 4129 hoggets, 731 wethers, 251 ewes and lambs and 45 ewes.

The hogget section included a sizeable selection of good condition sheep, particularly in the case of the ewe hoggets. For ewe hoggets the sale followed closely on recent levels and there was little alteration from these rates. The pick of the Romney ewe hoggets fetched from £6 to £6 12s, good £5 to £5 6s, and others at 81s to 935. This selection included a line of 280 good, big, early-shorn Romneys from Nolan Bros. (Grovetown, Blenheim), which sold from £5 6s to £6 12s, with two pens realising more than £6. A few pens of Corriedales brought from 84s to 91s, with the top price going to G. E. Galletly (Hawarden) for 645. Halfbreds sold up to 83s. In this section Bluff Station (Kekerangu) sent forward 444 sheep blade shorn three weeks ago which ranged from 56s to 735.

Wether hoggets were not so free of sale and values were generally back from 2s to 3s. The pick of the offering made from 60s to 665, average to good 52s to 58s, and others down to 41s. O. E. Hooper, jun. (Rakaia), sold 66 at 665; S. G. Pascoe (Halkett), 63 at 665; 92 halfbred hoggets from P. A. Inkson (Omihi) also realised 665; and A. E. Green (Little River) sold 28 at the same price.

Seventyfour two-shear shorn wethers from R. J. Northcote (West Melton) realised 655, and the same price was paid for a handful of woolly fourtooths. Bluff Station (Kekerangu) had almost half of the entry, and for 332 shorn wethers it obtained prices ranging from 39s to 555. Sales included:— Dalgety and Company, Ltd. sold, in conjunction with Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., and New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd.: on account of Bluff Station, Ltd. FAT LAMBS At 146. compared with 63 last sale, there was a relatively heavy yarding of fat lambs. Values held around schedule rates—no more—being generally down a few shillings on late rates. Vendors met the market freely, and a good clearance was effected. Best lambs made from 73s Id to 76s Id ’(with odd sales to 79s Id), and others from 65s Id to 72s Id. Top price was secured by H. Beal (East Eyreton), with the sale of one at 79s Id, but perhaps a better indication of the market was afforded by a line of 13 from J. Rowlands (Kirwee), which sold from 66s Id to 75s Id. The market, which was obviously oversupplied, was an erratic one and deteriorated as the sale progressed. Passings of rough and unfinished sheep were heavy. An appreciable number of extra good hoggets was penned, many of them being as big as six-tooth wethers. Values at the outset were 5s to 6s below late rates and later the drop in the case of some of the big hoggets was heavier.

Top price went to C. E. Schaffer (Lincoln), with the sale of 14 at 89s Id to 91s Id, with five at the higher price. Wagner Estate, Ltd. (Brookside) sold a line of 57 at 78s Id to 90s Id, with 11 at the higher figure. Values were:— heavy hoggets, 77s Id to 91s Prime medium, 70s Id to 74s Id. Prime light, 50s Id to 61s Id.

The mar- • ket was weak all round, a sharp drop being experienced in values for all classes of sheep. There was very little competition, and passings were fairly numerous. The wether market being over-supplied, values receded by fully 12s 6d. In the abj sence of competition from export I buyers—the works are busy with the ‘ large intake of lambs—fat ewes, too, i were at a sharp discount and were hard to place even at a drop in values from 10s to 15s. The niarket for wethers was topped by G. J Francis (Halswell >. with the sale of 78 at 73s Id to 84s Id, with 15 at the higher price. Best price for ewes went to R. D. FAT CATTLE Most classes of fat cattle were easier. Steers were cheaper on an average by about £3 a head, and in odd cases the decline was even more pronounced. There were not so many heifers in the selection, and here prices were easier by about £2 a head. Butchers’ cows showed a similar decline, but boner-type cows held their own. The offering of 669 cattle, compared with 699 head at the sale a fortnight ago, contained a good proportion of high quality beef. The market for steers was topped with a big beast from K. H. and E J. Boyle (No. 4 R.D., Christchurch), which sold at £54 7s 6d, but this sale was well out on its own. and the next best price was under £5O. Heifers sold up to £35 2s 6d for one from Mooney Valley, Ltd. STORE CATTLE In the store pens there was a fair sized entry of mixed quality cattle, with only a few good quality* lines offered. Even for the best of the selection values were easier, with a decline of 20s to 40s a head for all classes of cattle apart from boner cows, which continued to sell at about late rates. The following are quotable lines: Dalgety and Company sold: on account of W. L. Doak (Leithfield), 17 two-year-old Shorthorn steers from £2O 13s 6d to £25 8s 6d; J. W. The best of the bulls made up to £47 17s 6d, with those in indifferent condition selling down to about DAIRY CATTLE The dairy cattle sale was followed by only a modest audience and interest in the sale was fairly limited. In the entry of about 40 head cows predominated and except for one or two useful cows the offering was generally of secondary quality. A few advertised Friesian cows met a good sale, but apart from these values were back about 30s a head. Apart from the advertised line, which sold to more than £3O, best second, third and fourth calvers sold from £25 to £33, with the balance of the cows down to £lO 10s. The best of a rather unattractive heifer selection sold at £22 to £29. with an odd extra good beast to £33. and the balance ranged down to £l5. VEALERS There was a full yarding of veal with entries up about 80 head on the last sale, making the offering the largest for quite a few weeks. As was to be expected under these conditions values eased from about 20s under late rates at the opening to about 40s down at the close. Extra prime large runners sold up to £27 Is, price runners £2O to £24; best quality suckers £l4 to £lB 3s 6d, good medium suckers £lO 3s 6d to £l3 8s 6d; good quality small calves £7 3s 6d to £9 18s 6d. and small and rough £3 to £6 18s 6d.

FAT PIGS There was a medium entry in the porker section and values opened a shade easier. As the sale progressed, however, the market firmed and last week’s good rates were practically maintained. Choppers were to hand in fairly heavy numbers and the sale was a good one, especially for this time of the year. In the bacon section the entry was large, three trucks of pigs from outside districts being Included. The sale was excellent considering the size of the entry. Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers, £7 Os 6d to £8 2s 6d. Medium porkers, £8 2s 6d to £8 14s 6d. Heavy porkers, £8 17s 6d to £9 9s 6d. Light baconers, £9 14s 6d to £lO 12s fid. Medium baconers, £lO 12s 6d to £ll 12s 6d. , Heavy baconers, £ll 14s 6d to £l3 Is 6d. Choppers, £ll 18s 6d to £2O 18s 6d. STORE PIGS The entry in the store pig section was again a large one but quality was a little disappointing. The attendance of buyers was the smallest this season and values eased considerably all around. Included in the entry were six advertised sows, but as these did not reach vendors’ reserves they were passed in. Values were:— Small weaners, 65s to 85s. Best weaners, 88s to 955. Slips, 100 s to 115 s. Small and medium stores, 125 s to 1355. Large stores, 140 s to 14os. BURNSIDE (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, Nov. 20. Values for fat cattle improved appreciably at Burnside today. The sale was buoyant, and from the outset values were £3 to £4 above the rates of last week, and for some choice light-weights there was a further improvement in values. Cows and heifers were also in better demand, and they advanced by £2 to £5. In the fat sheep section, best wethers were only a shade easier than last sale, but other classes were back by 5s to 7s. Fat ewes began a shade easier, picked up to late rates for most of the sale, and then eased again at the close. The better class of hogget sold in line with late rates, but medium quality was easier. There was a sound sale for lambs, with butchers operating freely for particularly handyweights, which, however, appeared to be slightly under schedule. In the fat pig department of the sale, the market was firm throughout. Values were:— Fat Cattle.—Extra prime bullocks to £5B 17s 6d, prime heavy £52 to £55, prime £46 17s 6d to £49 17s 6d, medium £37 17s 6d to £4O 17s 6d, and light to £32; prime heifers £32 17s 6d to £39 7s 6d, medium £26 12s 6d to £3O 2s 6d, and light from £25 2s 6d; prime cows £27 2s 6d to £34 2s 6d, medium £23 17s 6d to £25 17s 6d, and light from £l9 12s 6d. The festival raised £l5OO for a new home for the aged.
