NEW AWARD FOR CLEANERS

Cleaners working more chan 20 feet above the ground, a floor or a veranda will be,required to use safety devices to prevent falls, and if they fail to use devices nrovided thev may be dismissed from their job. This is one of the new provisions in the new award for cleaners, caretakers, lift attendants and watchmen in the ; Northern. Taranaki. Wellington j Canterbury and Otago and Southland industrial districts. The i award, which -will have effect . from October 10. embodies the [ terms of settlement arrived at bv assessors in Conciliation CouncilWorkers under the award will receive increases in their weekly waaes of about ss. while hourly rates will be raised bv lid. Caretakers in charge of five or more workers will receive a minimum wage of £lO 8s 6d a week, while of. er caretakers will get £9 13s 6d a week. Male cleaners, and cleaner-lift attendants will receive £9 Is 3d a week. The wage for female cleaners has been put up to £6 8s a week. Watchmen will get £9 10s 9d a week.

Regularly employed cleaners whose work is substantially done between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. will receive an additional 4s a night. Bicycle allowances and the allowance for workers whose daily hours are not continuous, apart from resident caretakers, have

been increased from 2s 6d a day to 2s 9d. Cleaners employed in rubber factories who come into contact with carbon black will receive 7d an hour extra, with a minimum payment of 3s 6d a day. The award says that where practicable a heater shall be supplied in all lifts where an attendant is employed. Another new provision is that raincoats will be made available to workers, where they are required.
