RESPONSIBILITIES OF HERITAGE

“Men Dying From Effects Of War” “Although it is 12 years since the end of World War 11, men are still dying from its effects and their children become our responsibility,” said Mr John Stewart, seconding the motion for adoption of the report and balance sheet of Heritage (Canterbury) Inc. at its annual meeting last evening. It would be at least 15 years before the work of Heritage would lessen he said. Heritage was increasing its family of young children because of the deaths of war pensioners who had married since the war. The president (Mr R. V. Hughes) said that the enthusiasm for the movement which was based on patriotism had now gone and a new generation had grown up who had not experienced the horrors of war. “I am truly amazed and grateful that our membership has been maintained so well and that our movement has received such strong support.” he said. “Education is our biggest job. and our movement can feel proud that our children have been so successful in their studies.” Aims of Movement The aims of the movement to see that no child of a serviceman who died in the service of his country lacked a full education and a good start in life were being carried out, he said. Finance would continue to be a problem as present reserves of some £BOOO could be used up rapidly.

Assistance given by the movement cost some £3OOO a year and to maintain this until the last child who needed assistance was helped, the movement would need strong support for years to come, he said.

Assistance was completely confidential and she could truthfully say that she had the trust and confidence of each one of the 250 mothers of Heritage children in the Canterbury area, said the visiting officer, Mrs J. El Mackay. The greatest pleasure she could receive was the cheery “hello" from the children she met in the street The meeting elected the following officers for the coming year:— President, Mr H. S. Southern: vice-presidents, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) Messrs John Stewart and C. J. Henty; secretary-treas-urer. Mr D. W. Bain: executive. Dr. W. Mark Brown. Messrs R. V. Hughes, C. L. Bacon. H. B. Duckworth. H. Stuart Jones. W. S. Mac Gibbon. W. G. Quirk, H. G. Royds, and F. H. Walls.
