PRISON SENTENCE REDUCED
A sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment imposed on William Frederick Beaumont Sloan, aged 29 (Mr J. G. Leggat), was reduced to six months when Sloan appealed in the Supreme Court yesterday before Mr Justice Adams. Sloan was convicted in the Magistrate’s Court on September 19 on a charge of breaking and entering and theft. Quashing the original sentence his Honour said that Sloan was the oldest of the six men who had been involved in the offence, but he had not taken an active part in its commission. The sentence was somewhat excessive and would be reduced to six months from the date of the conviction. Appeals Dismissed A sentence of Borstal training on Barry Leonard Taylor, aged 17, was upheld. Taylor, for whom Mr J. G. Leggat appeared, appealed against a sentence imposed on charges of breaking and entering and theft and false pretences. An appeal by Kenneth Sullivan against a sentence of three months’ imprisonment on a charge of being idle and disorderly was dismissed. Sullivan, who was not represented, was sentenced in the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court on October 5.
