STATE MUSIC BURSARIES
Announcement Of Awards
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 14. Five Government bursaries in music have been awarded for 1958. the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr S. W. Smith) said today The bursaries, at the rate of £4OO a year, plus £5O return passage, have been awarded to the following: Joan Havill (Wanganui), piano, two years; Donald Mclntyre (Auckland), singing, two years; Corinne Bridge (Wellington), singing, two years; Ralph Aldrich (Lower Hutt), violin, two years; and Barbara Chipper (Masterton), violin, who has also been awarded a bursary for two years but will only receive £2OO a year as she has a Royal Schools’ scholarship.
The awards have been made on the recommendation of the Music Bursary Selection Committee which consisted of Professor C. Nalden, Mr E. Empson and Mr J. Robertson, with Mr J. V. Meech. acting secretary for Internal Affairs, as chairman. “Mr Robertson retires from the committee this year.’’ said Mr Smith, “and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking him for the very fine work he has done. His interest in our promising young musicians has been genuine and will, I know, continue on his return to England.” Mr Smith also announced that the following had been awarded bursaries of £l5O a year for three years to take the executant diploma course at Auckland University:—Mary Bramley (Uruti), ’cello; Jocelyn Garvin (New Plymouth), viola; Margaret Petheram (New Plymouth), violin; Lynette Pullen-Burry (Auckland), piano: Graeme Young (Auckland), clarinet; and Phillip Verran (Auckland), piano.
