CURRENT NOTES

The November meeting of Spreydon sub-branch Red Cross Society was held at the Salvation Army Rest Home for aged women. Colombo street. The following gifts were received: £2 2s was for disabled services; £1 10s for Christmas comforts; £1 Is toward the conference to be held at Delhi. Mrs Reeves and party provided a programme of entertainment as follows: Mrs Reeves and Mrs Rhcna Burrows (piano duets), Mrs Ledsham (vocal solos). Miss Mangles (solos and monologues). Mrs Pashby (humorous items).*Mr Harvard (banjo solos). Each resident of the home was given .a' card and handkerchief. The I afternoon closed with community | singing and afternoon tea.

For their final gathering of the year members of the Associates’ Group were the guests of Mrs G. W. Fairweather, president of the National Council of Women, at her home in Hawthorndon road. A programme of impromptu items was enjoyed, including a humorous sketch by Mrs Woodcock and pianoforte solos by Mr Croucher. Miss R. A. Alston, chairman of the Associates’ Group, presented Mrs Fairweather with a sheaf of flowers as a token of the group's appreciation of her hospitality and Mrs A. Fuldseth thanked her hostess on behalf of those present. Miss V. Oppenheim presented a posy of sweet peas to Miss R. A. Alston in appreciation of her chairmanship during the year.

It has been decided that the, exhibition of Oriental art and; crafts which is being at present| staged in the Durham Street Art| Gallery by the Christchurch area, group of the Pan-Pacific and South-east Asia Women’s Association will remain open on Saturday and Sunday. It had originally been planned to close the exhibition this evening. The response from the public had been very good, said the chairman of the organising committee (Mrs C. Weststrate) yesterday, so it was decided to open the exhibition from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. This would give the many visitors to Christchurch for the show and the races a chance of seeing the many fine exhibits. It would also give school children the opportunity of seeing the exhibits and help further their social studies.

A successful bring and buy garden party was held at the home of Mrs F. H. Polhill, Locarno street, by the Opawa-St. Martins Red Cross sub-centre. Nearly £2O was raised.

The Gold Star Mothers’ Club recently celebrated the seventh anniversary of the club, founded by mothers of deceased servicemen. Mrs Sole was welcomed from the Auckland branch. Mrs Alexander cut the cake. Mrs V. Scott presided.
