OIL SEARCH IN CEYLON
Request For Experts From Russia
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 14. The Government of Ceylon has asked Russia to send a team of
experts, with the least possible delay, to explore crude oil deposits in Ceylon, says the “Manchester Guardian” Colombo correspondent. The Government’s request is a sequel to a communication received in Colombo from Moscow through Ceylon’s Ambassador in Russia saying that Russian oil technologists were of the opinion that considerable subterranean oil deposits were available in Ceylon for exploitation. The Russian surmise is supported by the findings of a recent Indian geological survey which indicates there are rich oil deposits in the area south of Madras extending into Palk Strait.
The Government has asked Russia to give its request the highest priority as the Government is at present negotiating with British and American oil interests to set up a refinery in Cevlon to cost £l2m. If the Russians strike oil in Ceylon it will be necessary for the Ceylonese to view the British and American companies’ proposals in a new light
