Kennel Club's Show Attracts Big Entries

The Canterbury Kennel Club's! 52nd annual show, held in conjunction with the Canterbury] Agricultural and Pastoral Asso-1 ciation Show, opened yesterday.] The show was well supported with 256 dogs entered for com- ( petition. The judging was carried out on the lawn and many persons sat for several hours watching it. ‘ Rain and overcast conditions.threatened to move the judging in-ii side the main building but the ] weather cleared and the day I' ended pleasantly. The judge is Mr C. E. Milward, I < of Braeside, near Melbourne, who < has bred dogs for many years. Mr]? Milward is a well-known Aus-j, traliart judge and has acted at theu Brisbane and Adelaide Royal < Shows, as well as many country j s shows and exhibitions. L Entries were much the same as Is last year, but there were changes | in several sections. Increases in f the number of cocker spaniels, c Dalmatians, and smooth and wirehaired terriers proved the in- \ creasing popularity of these T breeds. There were also good j numbers of entries in the dachs- t hund, poodle, Pekingese and j samoyed classes. e An unusual entry, and one c which attracted much attention, W’as that of a young St. Bernard, a Robin of Gothard, owned by Mrs v M. W. MacPherson. The dog, 1 which was less than nine months c old, was the first St. Bernard a to be shown in Christchurch for a many years. In spite of its youth, the dog u as one of the r biggest in the show. v No bulldogs were shown this v year, as the only dog entered 1

.[died shortly before the show. This breed has been declining for several years, and appears to have lost its popularity. More than half the judging was I done yesterday and it will be 1 completed today. Judging will begin at 9.30 a.m. and it is expected that the presentation of trophies will be about 4.30 p.m. Judge’s Comments The dogs judged yesterday had been of average quality with only a few of international standard, !Mr Milward said. Exhibitors had j taken great care with the preparation of the dogs and this had ; been reflected in many of the ' classes. | The corgi classes were a bitter ’disappointment as many of the entries were mixed in type and •some were not presented in the ‘best of condition, said Mr Milward. “After hearing so much • about New Zealand corgis, I had expected them to come in much i stronger,” he said. French poodles were much better and of good [size. In general, it was a pleasing ! section to judge. They were well presented a most important feature in the showing of these dogs. Speaking of the challenge winner of the boxer section, Mr Milward said it was a fine dog, put down in good condition. In this section the winning dog puppy was a most impressive animal and showed promise of developing into a fine specimen. Dalmatian entries were pleasing and, as a breed, were probably well up to Australian standards. The one entry in the St. Bernard class was a very sound specimen and. although young had a future as a show dog, Mr Milward said. The rough-coated collies were not numerous, but the winners were well up to standard and were well presented and handled. The Great Danes shown were

handled well and soundly presented, Mr Milward said. A most pleasing class to judge with strength in numbers and quality, said the judge, speaking of the samoyed classes. The dogs were well presented, handled well, and were fine specimens. German shepherds were in good number and the competition brought out several pleasing animals, said Mr Milward. “This par- ; ticular breed was not presented ’ in the condition it should have been, but the winners well deserved their prizes and were fully up to standard.” The chow chow dog entry was a pleasing animal, well handled and properly presented. It was a good specimen of the breed. Toy Dogs In the toy dog section, black and tan. terriers were good, Mr Milward said. The breed was one he had seldom had the pleasure of judging and the standard of entries was high. One bitch he had seen was the finest specimen of the breed he had ever observed. Pomeranians and Pekingese were also of high quality, and many of the animals had excellent coats. The pug varied in quality; the winners were very good specimens with the necessary bone and substance and with a small compass. They had goid heads and were very well presented. Some entries were too light and were weak in the bone, Mr Milward said. The single sealyham terrier entry could have faced strong competition and was a fine specimen, he said. Well handled and presented, it was a credit to its owner. Border terriers were not strong in numbers, but the judge considered the challenge winning dog and bitch to be very good. West Highland white terriers did not come in in strong numbers, but lacked nothing in quality and were typical of the breed. Scottish terriers and cairns were a little disappointing to the judge, and collectively were below average in number and quality. Wire-haired fox terriers were below average but the challenge winning dog, although showing signs of age, was an excellent type and one of the best of the breed the j-udge had ever seen. Smooth-haired fox terriers came

in such stronger and the prizewinning dogs were right up to standard.

In the bull terriers the chal-lenge-winning dog was a firstclass animal, but the judge considered that the bitch, although good, carried far too much condition for the bone in her legs. Results:— NON-SPORTING CLASSES
