MALAYAN SCHOOL DEMONSTRATION
Students Barricaded In Girls’ School
(Rec. 9 p.m.) PENANG. Nov. 14. Riot squad police today opened fire with tear gas and grenades on several hundred Chinese school pupils who barricaded themselves in the Chinese Girls' High School, the police said. Eye witnesses said that several students were overcome by gas and one girl was trampled in the crowd and taken to hospital.
Chinese students in Penang have protested against a Government decision to ban over-age students from classes. Today, eye witnesses said that hundreds of boys from Han Chiang and Chung Hwa schools marched to the Chinese Girls’ High School. They barricaded themselves in the school hall.
Penang riot squad trucks rushed to the school and students were ordered to disperse. When they failed to do so Sifter an hour, police opened fire with gas and grenades.
About 15 minutes later, students with tears streaming down their faces scrambled through doors and windows.
Steel-helmeted police carrying batons and wicker riot shields herded them into the school grounds.
