Theft Admitted, But No Conviction
(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, November 12.
A charge of stealing £4B 10s, the property of the Transport Department, brought in the Rotorua Magistrate’s Court today against Warren Lindsay Thompson, a former traffic officer, was dismissed by Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., under section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act. The offence was admitted.
Thompson was represented by Mr P. J. Duncan.
The prosecution alleged that the money involved came from drivers’ test fees, which traffic oncers accept and then pay ‘into the department’s account. The discrepancies occurred between July 3 and October 23. As soon as the matter was brought to Thompson’s notice he paid the money in full.
Domestic difficulties had caused financial muddlement, Mr Duncan said. There was no intent to steal, no attempt to cover up. and no attempt to destroy receipts.
