“Gee. this clutch is stiff.’’ called the 11-year-old schoolboy from the top of a giant self-propelled combine sitting among £2 million worth of farm equipment and heavy road machinery at the show.
One of the future farmers of New Zealand, the schoolboy was also one of many without a cheque account to the tune of £. 10.000 to buy the combine. Nevertheless, with many others, he got a thrill from being able to make a minute inspection and have a tentative feel -of the controls of many pieces of machinery. A surprising feature of the show of implements and machinery was the number of heavy road rollers, motor graders and earth scrapers. To the “townie” it appeared that manufacturers and distributors were intent on selling gear for the development of virgin or rough farm land. There was a different reason. Exhibitors in this section have realised that many farmers are members of county councils that have big works programmes under way or planned. They are out to show gear that they think members would consider assets to their local bodies. The mechanisation of rural life
