Obituary MR E. BUCHANAN

Mr Elias Buchanan, a resident of Ashburton for about 51 years, during most of which he was associated with the flourmilling industry, died on Monday. He was 87.

Mr Buchanan was born in Scotland and came to New Zealand with his parents at the age of five. He was educated at the Kaitangata school and qualified as a stationary steam engineer at the Kaitangata coalmines. In 1901 he became engineer at the Timaru Milling Company and remained there for about five years before moving to Ashburton. In 1928 Mr Buchanan took over Rollitt’s Flour Mill at Ashburton in partnership with Messrs W. Robertson and A. Sutherland. He eventually took over the shares of his partners forming Buchanan's Flour Mill, Ltd., in 1922. Mr Buchanan was closely associated with the Presbyterian Church. He was an elder and one of the early Sunday school superintendents of Chalmers Church, Timaru. When he moved to Ashburton he joined St. Andrews Church where he was Sunday school superintendent for about 25 years and an elder of the church. He was a member of the Ashburton Borough Council for about six years and was chairman of the domain committee for a term. He was the first president of the i Te Marae Tennis Club and presi-1 dent of the Ashburton Musical: Club.

Mr Buchanan is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
