PHILIPPINES ELECTIONS
Garcia Well In Lead

NEW YORK. November 13.
President Carlos Garcia widened his lead in the Philippine Presidential election returns today. but his running mate trailed far behind a popular former congressman and diplomat. American Associated Press reported from Manila.
Mr Garcia. 61-year-old Nacionalista Party candidate and political heir of the late President Ramon Magsaysay. moved well ahead of the Liberal Party candidate. Mr Jose Yulo. 63-y°ar-old sugar magnate. Mr Garcia was a inning almost 40 per cent, of the votes in the five-man contest.
In the Vice-Presidential ballot. Mr Diosdado Macapagal. a Liberal, piled up an overwhelming lead over the House of Representatives speaker. Mr Jose Laurel, the Nacionalista nominee and member of one of the Philippines’ leading political families. Opposing Parties With Mr Garcia and Mr Macapagal victorious, the Philippines for the first time would have a President and VicePresident of opposing parties. Both favour continued strong cooperation with the United States. Returns from nearly all 53 provinces, representing about 20 per cent, of the vote, have been announced.
Mr Garcia’s Nacionalistas appeared likelv to dominate Congress again. The Philippine News Service said the Nacionalistas apparently would take at least 70 of the 102 House of Representatives seats.
Jakarta Demonstration. — Police opened fire on thousands of demonstrating schoolchildren in Jakarta today. First reports said one youth was dead and another seriously injured. Eye witnesses said the children stormed the Education Ministry to protest against I a school fees increase.—Jakarta. | November 12.
