BRITISH LABOUR LEADERS

Australian Visit Impracticable

CANBERRA. November 13. The Federal Parliamentary Labour Party today discussed and rejected as impracticable a proposal that the leader of the Labour Party in the House of Commons (Mr Gaitskell), and Mr Aneurin Bevan, should be pressed to visit Australia next year to stimulate support for the Federal Parliamentary Labour Party before the next election. The suggestion was made by Senator Grant, who told the caucus that a visit by Labour’s two leaders towards the end of next year and on the eve of the Australian election would greatly enhance Labour prospects of resuming office. Senator Grant suggested that an official invitation should be sent to them to come to Australia in November in anticipation of a federal election in December. Members said afterwards that it was decided not to proceed with the proposal because of the probability that the British Labour Party would itself be preparing for an election at the time.
