Town Hall Site

Sir,—The pioneers must be turning in their graves at the suggestions that the Avon be covered or Latimer square used for a town hall. We expect to hear official suggestions for using, say, Hagley Park for roads, but to have ordinary citizens advocating the destruction of Christchurch’s heritage of beauty is beyond comprehension. Do the supporters of the Latimer square site believe that no extensions will ever be made as council offices expand and multiply, or that the car park will not grow with the car population until not a tree or blade of grass is visible in the square? Even worse, noone has protested against two suggestions which can only be first steps towards turning the Avon into a closed drain. Let us be civilised and add to our ■open spaces when we build a town hall and not make Christchurch into a Concrete and asphalt jungle.—Yours, etc., 8.1. H. October 29, 1957.
