I.G.Y. Balloon Rises 22 Miles

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, October 29.

A neoprene balloon launched from the Invercargill weather office on September 30 as part of the International Geophysical Year programme, reached a height of 22 miles. The information transmitted from its radiosonde was made public this morning. This showed that there are temperature layers in the atmosphere up to the altitude of 22 miles. But, surprisingly enough, the coldest layer which the balloon passed through in its upward flight was only seven miles above the weather station. The temperature there was minus 77.8 deg.
