SYNTAX FIT FOR EPSOM
Near-Record Mile Trial (K.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE. Oct. 29 The Melbourne Cup favourite. Syntax, came through a searching mile speed trial at Epsom today, and dispelled doubts about his fitness for the L. K. S Mackinnon Stakes on Saturday. His trainer, F W. Hoysted, and jockey. W. Williamson, were delighted with the way the New Zealand champion ealloped and pulled up. Syntax ran a mile in Imin 44sec—exceptionally good time for Epsom. Syntax was free in his action and showed no signs of favouring the injured off foreleg, which caused his withdrawal from the Caulfield Cup The track record for a mile at Epsom is held by Textile. He ran Imin 42sec. be r ore winning the Caulfield Cup in 1927 The best recent effort over the distance was Imin 4.3 J tec. run by Lord Gavin before he won the Moonee Valley Cup last Saturday.
Syntax went to the line very Strongly today bounding along to beat his companion. King’s Bore, by a length and a half. Hoysted said Syntax would not work fast again before the Mackinnon Stakes on Saturday. He would be restricted to slow work at Mentone.
"His form in the Mackinnon Stakes will determine whether he will run in the Melbourne Cup. I hope he will run well.” Hoysted said.
