U.N. BORDER FORCE

Suggestion By Mr L. Pearson > 'Rec. 11.50 p.m.) OTTAWA. October 21 The former Canadian Minister of External Affairs. Mr Lester Pearson said last night that a United Nations force situated along the Syria-Turkey border would reduce the danger of a new flare-up in the Middle East. ‘‘lt does not have to be an armed force.” he said. “Just enough people so it is known thej’ are there. ‘‘Both sides fear aggression from the other side. The very fact of the force being there would reduce the danger of a flare-up.” Mr Pearson, winner of the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize, spoke in a television interview on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. A year ago at this time, as Canadian delegate to the United Nations, he was instrumental in getting Ihe United Nations to create the emergency force which now is in the Middle East pal rolling the Egypt-Israel border. Canada has contributed the biggest contingent to the force. He said in the interview that the Korean war in 1950 might have been prevented if a United Nations police force had been established along the demarcation between North and South Korea. In another interview with the United Press. Mr Pearson said the Turkish-Syrian situation—dangerous although it might be—could only be compared to the Suez crisis if fighting actually broke out. There was no reason for such an outbreak between States whose relations, although tense, were not and had not been characterised by the same kind of bitter hostility as existed between Israel and Egypt
