RIDER FOR REDCRAZE

George Moore or Neville Sellwood will be the new rider for the New Zealand champion, Redcraze, the greatest Australian stake-winner, in the £5500 weight-for-age W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturday. Redcraze’s regular jockey, A. Ward, will ride Prince Darius. It will be the first time he has been off the champion since last spring. Ward said today that the connexions of Prince Darius wanted him to ride the colt in the Cox Plate, so that he could get the feel of Prince Darius in the Melbourne way of galloping. Prince Darius has beaten Redcraze twice this year—in the Chelmsford Stakes, at Randwick, and again in the Craven Plate on the same course. The trainer, T. J. Smith, said today he would not engage any rider for Redcraze in the Cox Plate until tomorrow, when he would decide whether Landy would also run in the event.

Moore would be given the opportunity of selecting his mount if both horses were to run. Sellwood would then be asked to ride the other horse.

Redcraze looked fit after he worked over a mile in Imin at Flemington today. He ran the last five furlongs in Imin 3’,2sec. He was eager to go faster, but Ward restrained him.

The leading Victorian jockey, W. Williamson, today accepted the mount on the New Zealand stayer, Baron Boissier, in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup next Saturday.

Baron Boissier will arrive in Melbourne tomorrow, and will probably have his first work-out at Moonee Valley on Thursday.
