Women’s Golf NATIONAL TITLES

I Match Play Benins

(Neu? Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON. October 21. In excellent conditions, competitors in the women’s national golf championships sharpened up their: scoring very considerably today.

There were no major surprises in either of the two rounds played but of interest was the elimination of Mrs R. Purdon, of Te Awamutu, formerly Miss Margaret Hughes, who had to that stage made a very successful comeback into national golf. She was beaten in the second round by a prominent Manawatu player. Miss A Nash, after a splendid game in which Miss Nash needed only a bogey at the last hole to give her a scratch round of 73. Mrs Purdon and Miss Nash were out in 38—only one over par.

The Mellsop Cup winner. Miss Nicky Campbell, of Takaka had to survive two very close matches to enter the third round. This morning. Miss J. Duncan, of Wanganui, very nearly beat her and this afternoon Mrs H. McDiarmid took her to an even closer margin, the match finishing on the last green with Miss Campbell one

Miss E. J. McKenzie, of Master- 1 ton. revealed excellent form to make the tournament’s lowest handicapper Mrs V. S. Land work for her place in the third round. Miss Una Wickham, of Tauranga, who at the present stage seems a likely finalist, did not produce the golf equivalent to her starting 35 out this morning but she had plenty in hand to dispose of the Manawatu player, Mrs J.
