RACING N.Z. HORSES STILL TOP IN AUSTRALIA

There appears to be no end to the phenomenal run of successes by New Zealand-bred horses in Australia.

When Dalray* was campaigning brilliantly in Australia five years ago, Australians were saying that it would not be long before the New Zealand horses would meet their match.

But after Dalray came Rising Fast and Prince Cortauld, colossal winners in the 19.54-55 season. And by the time it was evident that Rising Fast was. with age, losing some of his brilliance, Redcraze rose swiftly to the top. Age and racing have wearied Redcraze, but New Zealand has provided his successor as champion and glamour horse in Australia. Tulloch, winner of the Caulfield Cup on Saturday, is already being compared with some of the greatest horses of the past —and with good reason. Although still in the early stages of his second season, Tulloch has won £41,532 10s. and more records should soon topple. Tulloch’s string of successes has been the feature of Australian racing so far this season, but many other New Zealand-bred gallopers are contributing to the splendid record of Dominion-bred horses in the Commonwealth. Splendid Achievement The sum of £358.195 was won in Australia last season by the progeny of sires domiciled in New Zealand. That was a splendid achievement, and one that might not be equalled this year, but the winnings of New Zealarfd-bred gallopers should again exceed £500.000. as they did in the 195556 season. Other New Zealand-bred winners of important races in Australia so far this season include: Monte Carlo (City Tattersall’s Gold Cup), Dark Spot (Burwood Handicap), Lochie (Club Welter Handicap). Ray Ribbon (Caulfield Stakes). Mac’s Amber (Toorak Handicap). Princess Tirage (Debutant Stakes), Lord Cortauld (Clibborn Handicap), Baron Boissier (Colin Stephen Stakes), Straight Draw (Metropolitan Handicap), Redcraze (Rosehill Hill Stakes). Gay Saba (Moonee Valley Stakes), Syntax (Memsie Stakes). Summalu (Heatherlie Handicap). Other New Zealand-bred winners have been: Akatarawa, Go Lightly (Gabador-Sagati), Cupid (Whistling Wind-Lovechase). Cerlosa (Faux Tirage-Good Abbess). Philaso (Beau Repaire-Astrophe-lia). No Boots (Pride of KildareGay Slipper), Plymouth (GabadorTreasure from Heaven), Gold Trek (Marco Polo ll—Gold Point), By Far (Gold Nib-Fame), Dipso (Ruthless-Blissful Lady), Salvador (Gabador-Sister Sal), and many others. A fading star, but still winning at “bush” meetings is Off Hand, which was a top-flight sprinter in New Zealand, where he raced as Hands Off.
