McMURDO SOUND. October 20. It has been estimated by the commander of the 61st Troop Carrier Group. Colonel William C. Forward, that 65 flights will be needed to complete supply drops at the United States bases at Marie Byrd Land and the South Pole. Four Globemasters are now at McMurdo Sound for the supply drops to other United States bases, and four flights have been made to Marie Byrd Land. It is estimated that about 55 tons and a half of supplies have been dropped at that base. The one supply flight to the South Pole last week dropped 10 tons of supplies there. Since Globemaster flights to McMurdo Sound began on October 4 the United States Air Force has carried 174 passengers and 100 tons of supplies on their 13 flights south.

The thirteenth Globemaster left Christchurch airport for McMurdo Sound at 9.16 a.m. yesterday. No flights south are scheduled for today. but the next aircraft to leave will carry 33 Air Force. Navy, and I.G.Y. men. More I.G.Y. equipment and supplies from the United States are due on a Globemaster tomorrow.

Sealing School Drive.— A grant of £1585 for developing and sealing the main drive at Avonside Girls’ High School has been approved by the Education Department. The letter confirming this grant was received at a meeting of the board of governors of the school last evening.
