FAREWELL TO WASHINGTON

Queen Leaves For New York (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, October 20.

With a wave of the hand and a briHiant smile. Queen Elizabeth said good-bye to President Eisenhower on the marble steps of the White House tonight. The Queen’s State visit to Washington ended officially as she and the Duke of Edinburgh drove away from the White House at 8 o'clock for the* Australian Embassy. After attending a Commonwealth dinner there, they will leave by train for a one-day visit to New York.

The ceremony on the White House steps was very brief. The Queen and the Duke walked out from the lobby of the White House, followed immediately by the President and Mrs Eisenhower. They turned towards a bank of photographers and posed for a few seconds, the Queen turning to the President and saying with a laugh: “We’re getting accustomed to them.”

The President then held the Queen’s arm and escorted her down the steps to the Royal limousine, which was flying the Queen’s Standard and the Stars and Stripes-. The Duke and Mrs Eisenhower walked behind them. “It's been great fun having you, * Mrs Eisenhower told the Royal couple as they entered the limousine.

“It has been wonderful,” the Queen replied. The Duke, preserving to the end the light touch which has marked his public appearances here, observed that Mrs Eisenhower was looking a little sad at the farewells. "Come home with us,” he urged her, laughing.
