Globemaster Makes Supply Drop

A Globemaster aircraft on a supply flight to the United States base at Marie Byrd Land developed engine trouble and had to carry out the supply dropping on three engines, according to a message received in Christchurch yesterday.

Piloted by Captain Victor Sti.nvhi. the aircraft was about halfway to Marie Byrd Land base when an oil leak developed in the number three engine. Captain Stianchi feathered the engine and continued the flight. The aircraft was carrying 29.000 lb of supplies, and is estimated to have flown about 1350 miles on the three engines. A Globcmaster left Christchurch airnort for McMurdo Sound at 9.16 a.m. yesterday, and included in the cargo was a replacement engine for Captain Stianchi’s aircraft. Passengers included Air Force engineers. Another Globemaster is expected to leave Christchurch for McMurdo Sound at 9 a.m. today.
