(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

MELBOURNE, October 10. Tulloch, the New Zealand-bred colt, ran the fastest mile and a half in Australian racing history yesterday to win the 1957 Caulfield Cup by two lengths. The hottest Caulfield Cup favourite ever, at 6 to 4 on. Tulloch beat another New Zealand-bred horse. Mac’s Amber (16 to 1), second, with the gallant Victorian stayer. Sailor’s Guide, a length away third. The crowd of 73.000 gave the jockey, Neville Sellwood, a tremendous ovation as he brought the champion colt, the first three-year-old to win the cup for 22 years, back to scale. t Tulloch’s time. 2min 26 9-10 sec. was almost a second faster than the previous Australian record of 2min 27? sec shared by the 1935 Caulfield Cup winner, Palfresco. and Blue Ocean, winner of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick during the Royal tour. Australian racing writers claimed today that Tulloch’s sizzling run was the second fastest mile and a naif recorded anywhere. The record is held by The Buzzard, which ran 2min 23sec when he won the English Newmarket in 1929. The fastest American mile and a half was 2min 27 3-ssec run by Bolingbroke at Belmont in 1942. Checked in Running Tulloch with 7-7 triumphed over a severe buffeting and interference at three stages in the race to win going away, and set a new weightcarrying record for a three-year-old. Because of the buffeting he was receiving. Sellwood switched Tulloch to the outside at the six-furlong nost. While he was on the rail. Tulloch was knocked back two places at the nine-furlong post and was interfered with again just before Sellwood moved him out. He was forced three horses wide as they approached the three-furlong nost. where again he struck trouble Tulloch swept into the straight at least five wide, strode past Mac's Amber as though he was standing still, and had the race won a furlong from home. Sellwood, who rode one of the greatest races of his career, did not even have to raise the whip to Tulloch. Once heads were straightened up the colt lengthened his stride, and in a few yards had streaked to the front. The win was Sellwood's third Caulfield Cup success. He won on Grey Boots in 1950. and on Basha Felika in 1951. A frenzy of excitement sweet . through the big crowd as soon as the course announcer said Tulloch had begun his run. and the colt came home to one of the created eVer Riven a Caulfield The Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s judge. Mr S. Shannon, caused a surprise when he semaphored that Tul- *? ch had won by two lengths. From the official stand, right on the finishing line, it appeared that Tulloch had won by at least five lengths. Most of the commentators descriomg the race gave five lengths as the winning margin. Before the cun. Tulloch had already established a stake-winning record for a three-vear-old in Australia. With the £BOOO prize monev i plus the £350 gold cup he won yesterday, his earnings have nowreached the daggering total, for a i colt, of £41.532 ins. • ' Tulloch has nroved a dream bar- • j sain for his 82-year-old owner. Mr E A. Ha lev. who has had more ’han «n 'ears’ experience of the v ictnria turf Hr was a leading 'j amateur jockey, an owner and

breeder, but has not previously won one of rhe big cups. The Svdney trainer. T. J. Smith, who bought Tulloch at the NewZealand yearling sales, sold him to Mr Haley for 750 guineas. Smith also won the 1956 Caulfield Cup with Redcraze. and the 1955 Melbourne Cup with Toporoa. Mac’s Amber, ridden perfectly oy W. Williamson, would have won nine out of 10 Caulfield Cups on his performance yesterday. He was clear after entering the straight, but with 9-4 against Tulloch’s 7-8 he had no chance with, the champion. Tulloch has not yet finished fur-! ther back than second in a race. He' has had 18 starts for 12 wins and : six seconds. The New Zealand grey. Zariba ■ (110 to 1). was lying seventh at the! mile, but dropped back to finish sec- | ond last in a field of 17. A former New Zealand horse. Sir! William (50 to 1). after being with the leaders half a mile from home, i found the distance too great, and | finished fourteenth.
