<Rec. 11 p.m.) CAPE CANAVERAL (Florida), October 19. A rocket believed to be an Army Jupiter lit up the launching area last night in an apparent flame-out that failed to lift if off the ground. Another missile built to launch an earth satellite—the Navy's Vanguard—sat inert on its ramp in spite of two surges of activity that were either firing preparations or rehearsals.

A flameout, in which a missile’s fuel burns out on the launching site, is not necessarily disastrous to the rocket and sometimes indicates some failure of mechanism or fuel feed.

Two preliminary tests of Vanguard stages have been held and have been described officially as successful A trial of all three stages is set for December.
