COMMENDATION FOR PILOT
Part In Rescue Of Three Men
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 3. For his part in the rescue of three men after a helicopter accident in the Bay of Plenty on June 8. Mr W. J. Pentecost, a commercial pilot, of Rotorua has been awarded the Queen’s Commendation for valuable services in the air. Mr Pentecost located the stranded men in a gorge and then flew down between ridges 2000 feet high to drop essential supplies. He came down to 200 feet in his small plane and because of heaw cloud he flew almost in darkness. The next day, Mr Pentecost again flew into the gorge and dropped more food and a rubber dinshy. in which the three men made their way downstream to safetv. ‘‘This award is bestowed on civilian airmen only in exceptional circumstances.” said the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr T. P. Shand) tonight. “The courage and determination shown by Mr Pentecost were well beyond the scope of his norqaal duties.”
