Cremation Charges

Sir, —How is it that the charge tor a cremation in Auckland was £5, increased lately to £6, yet in Christchurch it was £8 now increased to £9? Surely there cannot be any justifiable reason for that great difference.—Yours, etc , VERY ANXIOUS. September 29, 1957.

[The secretary of the Cremation Society of Canterbury (Mr J. Hanna) said yesterday that it was obvious that “Very Anxious” was not aware of the difference between the services rendered by the Auckland and Christchurch crematoria. The society could give many reasons for the difference in charges, one of the main ones being that the Christchurch crematorium paid the expenses that the funeral directors in Auckland had to meet beyond the charges of the Auckland crematorium. The correspondent’s anxiety would be alleviated should he call at the office and the society would be only too pleased to point out the reasons for the different charges and eventually prove that the charges in Christchurch compare more than favourably with those in Auckland.]
