EMBROIDERY AND WEAVING
Adult Education Classes
A preliminary course in embroidery and weaving is being organised by the Adult Education Department, Canterbury University College, and will begin in a week. The tutor will be Mrs Edith Eilers who has had experience as a professional weaver in Britain, and considerable experience as an art teacher in England and New Zealand. The, course will be held at the Adult Education Department, in Gloucester street.
The approach to embroidery will be a creative one and will be based on the principle of people designing their own patterns. The class will be taught to do this spontaneously. In weaving, the class will learn how to set up a loom professionally and how to design. Traditional patterns will be used as a beginning but creative design will be taught as one of the objectives of the course.
Sympathy was expressed with the relatives of Miss Gilmour and Mrs A. Taylor at a recent meeting of the Home Economics Association’s needlecraft circle. Mrs Stewart demonstrated how to cover a small buckram shape and transform it into a most attractive hat with Melusine or grosgrain and a twist of nylon net. A Swiss straw was also given a different look by shaping on a block. Mrs G. Willis thanked the demonstrator. Mrs Borland presided.
