Teaka’s Brilliant Trial Over Seven Furlongs
Teaka was much too good for his stablemate Olympic Flame over seven furlongs on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. Ridden by N.
Eastwood, he won the trial by four lengths and sped over the last half-mile in 50 4-5 sec. Olympic Flame was ridden by J. M. Dempsey. Teaka missed a race on the first day of the Dunedin meeting because the track was not expected to suit him. He is being prepared for the spring meeting at Trentham. He will probably run against the milers in the Wainui Handicap on the first day at Trentham. but will be tested over more ground later at the meeting. Teaka could be above the average as a stayer this season. Keep Time <E. G. Low) dashed in from the half-mile in 49 3-5 sec. He is shaping well in his preparation for the Wellington spring meeting, where he raced consistently in the big mile races last season. His . latest form is two seconds over more ground at Ashburton. Rise and Shine (C. T. Wilson) was keen to increase her speed while running half a mile in 52 2-ssec. She will probably be able to strike form immediately she starts on another campaign. Undergrowth fW. McGregor) started slowly from the half-mile and accelerated in the straight. He recorded 55 l-ssec for the distance. Undergrowth was well on the way towards a splendid record for Mr H. D. Greenwood until leg trouble affected him.
Allemande (E. G. Low) and Rustic (L. J. Ellis) had wind asistance while sprinting from the three furlongs in 37 2-ssec, but both did the job well. Ellis trains Rustic for Mr L. J. Coulter. She is a two-year-old filly by The Unicorn from Arustra, so is a half-sister to Rustler, a Dunedin Guineas winner.
The mating of Arustra with The Unicorn came about through a raffle. The prize, a free service by The Unicorn, was won by Mr J. O’Brien, of Wellington. Mr O’Brien persuaded Mr Coulter to send one of his two brood marcs north for the gift service. Mr Coulter picked Arustra because she had failed to produce for the previous three years, and her mating with the young Gold Nib horse produced Rustic, an attractive youngster. Allemande. a two-year-old daughter of Gabador and Me-Too. is well forward, although she has not raced yet. Writer (N. Eastwood) was tried over six furlongs on the plough yesterday. He recorded Imin 18 3-ssec and showed encouraging progress in his preparation for another campaign. Teko (M. D. Alexander) ran his six furlongs in Imin 18 3-5 sec. The stablemates Heath (R. J. Blair) and Royal Dasher <A. J. Stokes) joined him for the last five, Teko ran the final half-mile in 51sec.
Fulgent is to start a hurdling career at Orari on October 19. Yesterday, he jumped four standard hurdles after a preliminary test over the pony hurdles. He shows fair promise.
