WHITTLING WOOD AS HOBBY
Chain Carved From Broomstick
"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. October 3.
Mr C. Lynch, a retired enginedriver from Sydney, kills time by whittling a piece of wood with a pocket knife. When he arrived at Auckland in the Orsova from North America he had something to show for his trip. He had carved a chain, five feet long and with 34 links, from a broomstick. There were no joins and Mr Lynch used no give, tacks or other aids. The job took him only five days and he proudly draped the finished article over his shoulders like a mayoral chain for the benefit of press photographers. Mr Lynch’s other claim to fame is that he drove the SvdneyMelboume train Spirit of Progress on its inaugural trip.
