British housewives are buying more butter than margarine for the first time since the war. but margarine producers are fighting back. , _ Figures released by the Butter Information Council last night show that butter sales exceeded those of margarine by 15.240 tons during the first six months of this year. , , In an attempt to regain favour Britain's leading margarine firm. Van Den Bergh’s, has sent to thousands of housewives a hamper containing a half-bottle of champagne, two glasses, a table napkin, a butter knife, and lib ol margarine. , A spokesman for the Butter Information Council said yesterday that the amount of butter exported by Australia to Briain had fallen during the first half of this year despite the rise in buttei consumption. The figures were 700,193 cwt this year against 895.341 in the same period last year.
