Cleaning Milking Shed Equipment Q« Is there any easy way to prevent the formation of milkstones and fatty deposits in milking shed equipment? Aj Shell Delak No. 2 a mild alkali-Teepol mixture is designed especially to reduce milkstone build-up, to give greater efficiency at reduced temperatures and less corrosion of tinned ware. Shell Delak No. 2 is a complete, balanced dairy detergent in convenient powder form, easy to handle. It is a Teepol plus alkali mixture specially developed by Shell and conforms to the Ruakura type ‘B’ specification. Ask about it at your dairy company. Wild Mint Q s How do you get rid of wild mint growing among orchard trees? Is there a spray that will kill the mint and not the trees? If so, when do you apply it? A! Wild mint is susceptible to water soluble formulations of 24D and MCPA. The spray should be applied to the weeds with a fine nozzle in October or November. Hold the spray nozzle as close to the ground as possible as no spray drift must reach the trees. Repeat applications will probably be required. Consult your local stockist of hormone weedkillers for further details. Controlling Slaters Q ’ lam looking for a spray that will kill slaters and slugs. These pests play havoc in both flower and vegetable gardens. The slaters are so numerous they are finding their way into the house. My section is 100 feet square and I would like to cover most of it. A! Slaters (woodlice) are difficult to kill but we have had considerable success with Dieldrex 15 at the rate of 4 fl. oz. per gallon of water, using this mixture to spray into crevices and areas infested by the woodlice. Generally slaters inhabit dark corners and remain hidden under loose timber, bark, etc., where it is difficult to gain access to their hiding places. A liberal application of a Dieldrex 15 spray will, however, effectively control these pests. Dieldrex 15 sprayed on to garden soil at the same concentration will also control slugs but possibly the best method is to lay baits and these are available under various trade brands. These baits are also effective for a short period against slaters but require to be renewed after they become wet through rain or heavy dew. There should be no need to spray your entire section as you suggest. Colostrom Should there be an egg included among the ingredients of Colostrom milk? * ! If a newly bom iamb is to survive it must be given Colostrom which is secreted by a ewe for 48 hours after lambing. An improved recipe for artificial Colostrom can be prepared as follows: 1 beer bottle of cow's milk, 1 small teaspoonful cod liver oil, 1 dessertspoonful sugar, 1 beaten egg.
