Water Boy’s Good Trial Improves Wingatui Chances

"The Press” -Special Service

DUNEDIN, October 3. Water Boy enhanced his prospects in the Federal Handicap, the second leg of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s double on Saturday, when he came through his final preparation in impressive style at Wingatui this morning. The track was hard and fast, and it looks likely that it will remain that way for the meeting. The gallops were held on the course proper with the trestles 45ft out. Overhead conditions were ideal. Water Boy (W. Gibbs) was assisted over the early stages by Hope So (B. Blair) to run the opening two furlongs in the smart time of 24sec, and the Neptune gelding was galloping easily to work clear in the run home to complete five furlongs in Imin ssec. Had he been asked for a final effort he could have improved on this time. Amenity (W. A. Gibbs) and Iroquoi (G. E. Lowry) came home together ahead of Bagman (R. J. Mackie) and Tripped (J. R. Currie) after five furlongs in Imin 7sec, the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. Amenity spoilt his chance of success in the hack sprint last week when he ran wide at the home turn.

Iroquoi has been scratched from the hurdle race and will start in the Milbum Hack Handicap if a suitable apprentice is available. Wondon, ridden by his trainer. A I. Powell, was not out for time when he equalled these performances. He has come to no harm from his runaway win in the hack sprint last week. The extra furlong in the Milburn Hack Handicap should not trouble him. Showed Dash Allfair (H. .T. Anderton) and Persia (A. I. Powell) dashed over tht same ground in Imin 7 2-ssec. They were doing their best work over the concluding stages to run the last three furlongs in 39 2-ssec. Persia was galloping very easily and looks in splendid order for his test in the open sprint, in which he will be one of the favourites. Copperfield (L. W. Hare) was given an easy run in Imin 9sec. He was allowed to increase his pace in the run home to cover the tast three furlongs in 41 4-ssec.

Riverwood (R. J. Mackie) had an advantage in the weights when he led Strada (P. Jones) by a length at the end of six furlongs in Imin 21 2-ssec. In an evenly run trial they covered the last three furlongs in 40 4-ssec

Some Bounder (G. Gladwell) was suited by the track conditions when he ran the first three furlongs in the smart time of 38 3-ssec. He was easing up at the end of his gallop to complete six furlongs in Imin 22sec.

Cassius (L. W. Hare) was given an easy run in Imin 24 4-ssec, the first three furlongs in 42 3-ssec.

Sound Effort King Robin, ridden by his trainer, A- J. Williams, and Scuppered (G. E Lowry) repeated their sound performance of Tuesday morning. They kept together throughout to cover seven furlongs in the good time of Imin 33 2-ssec. The fast pace of 51 2-ssec set over the first half-mile had Tarbillon iW. Gibbs) toiling at the rear and he was several lengths back at the finish.

Peril (H. T. Anderton) was a length and a hali ahead of Pot Luck (A. I. Powell), at the end of seven furlongs, and he could have increased this margin with ease. The distance was run in Imin 35 4-ssec, the opening half-mile in 52 3-ssec. Scotch Emblem (J. R. Currie) and Hunt the Slipper (G. Glad well) ran the first half-mile in 52 3-ssec, and were on terms in Imin 36 4-ssec. Prince Consort (R. L. Murray) and Exodus (A. N. Didham) ran the first three furlongs in 40 3-ssec, and were not ridden out to finish together in Imin 39 2-ssec.

Irish Brawl was given an easv run over seven furlongs, and Captain

Hunt was not hurried over half a mile. The McLean Stakes winner, Minglow (R. J. Mackie), was under a good hold when she finished behind Waterfall (W. A. Gibbs) and Hunted (G. E. Lowry) at the end of three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. Waterfall, which will not race tomorrow, was a length and a half clear of her stablemate, with a similar margin to Minglow. Minglow has thrived since her race last Saturday and is in splendid order for the Juvenile Handicap on Saturday. Ace High (H. T. Anderton) and Bon Soir (P. Jones) completed their work by coming home the last three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. Guineas Candidates Black Star, Bow Tie and Archway completed their final trials for the Dunedin Guineas and J. B. Reid Cup in an outstanding manner. Black Star (H. T. Anderton) shaded Bow Tie (R. J. Mackie) in one of the fastest trials recorded on the track for some time. After covering the first three furlongs in 37sec. they completed six furlongs in Imin 17 3-ssec. Both horses were kept, up to their work and were doing their best, but it was a pro-; mising return to the form which took them into open class as two-year-olds last season.

Black Star and Bow Tie have been disappointing since they resumed racing this term, but if they confirm today’s track form in the Dunedin Guineas it will add considerable interest to the classic mile. Archway’s trial was also impressive. Ridden by R. J. Mackie, he appeared to have something in reserve when he went over the same ground with Canon (G. A Campbell) in Imin 18sec, the opening furlong in 38 2-ssec. He has been scratched from his alternative engagement in the Milburn Handicap for apprentice riders. Marcoette has been scratched from the Milburn Hack Handicap and will also run in the Guineas. H. A. Anderton, the trainer of The Ranger, the only other dual accentor at the meeting, said The Ranger would probably start in the Milburn Hack Handicap for apprentice riders.
