CONTROL OF N.Z. HOTELS
Brewers’ Ownership Denied (New Zealand Press Association) GREYMOUTH, October 3. A claim that New Zealand brewers did not dominate the hotel industry was made by the president of the Brewers’ Association of New Zealand (Mr J A. Harley! in Greymouth this evening. “It is stated very frequently that the hotel industry is dominated by the brewers of New Zealand.” said Mr Harley. “Criticism from the New Zealand Alliance is levelled, mostly in general terms, against the brewers of the country. “It is not generally known that the brewers of New Zealand do not dominate the hotel industry It is my opinion that fewer than 20 per cent, of the hotels are brewery-owned or controlled “This matter is so important that my association is causing an investigation to be made, and oefore the election we will be able to publish the actual number of hotels which are under brewery financial control or ownership." Mr Harley said.
