BURIED IN CONCRETE

(Rec. 11 p.m.) SOMERSET (Kentucky), Oct. 3. Rescuers last night lost a four hours and a half race against time when a man buried up to his neck in hardening concrete was found to be dead when freed. Creston Wallace, aged 22, of Somerset, was trapped in a 32ft pit when concrete being poured into another pit ■ 10ft away broke through the earth and poured upon him. A soil foundation inspector, Wallace was inspecting the soil in the pit before concrete was poured into it. The holes were dug for the foundation of a building. Their small diameter prevented more than two men at a time from working at freeing the trapped man. and meanwhile the concrete continued to harden. A doctor lowered into the pit after two hours of digging gave Wallace a heart stimulus injection, but he could not determine if he was alive then.
