Five-Week-Old Boar For Household Pet
A five-week-old boar, which, a fortnight ago was running wild near the Hurunui river, may not be everybody’s idea of a pleasant fireside companion, but he has the full recommendation of one Christchurch family who have adopted him as a household pet. Now completely house-trained. “Pig” ithe name to which he instinctively answers) was caught and carried by a Labrador retriever to his master on a shooting trip two weeks ago. Brought home unharmed, he is now “one of the family.” wandering through the house, up and down the stairs and round the garden (but never out of the property) during the day and curling up by the fire at night, before
he is put out to sleep in a rabbit hutch. Pig is about the size of a cat. His movements are similar to those of a house-trained dog, and, according to the owner, several guests have been initially deceived. He is now accustomed to a leash which is used when he is taken outside the gate and he also enjoys a ride in a motorcar.
The woman of the house has no complaints on the ground of cleanliness and her young son often wipes the pig’s feet before allowing him to enter the house. The parting remark made by her husband was, “one thing you can say, we find him a lot better company than some of the people we know.”
