DETENTION CAMP IN CYPRUS
Disturbance Over ’Flu Broadcast
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) NICOSIA. Sept. 30. A company of British troops armed with anti-riot shields and staves helped to quell a demonstration by Eoka men detained at a camp in Pyla, South Cyprus, on Saturday night, local Greek language newspapers reported today. The disturbances followed a Cyprus Government statement broadcast over the local radio claiming there were no Asian influenza cases among those detained.
Newspapers had earlier published a letter from a man in one of the camps alleging failure to treat influenza sufferers.
A further official communique issued today said there had been no riot in the camp on Saturday night.
There was a certain amount of noisy protest from some compounds. the communique said.
At the time of the Cyprus Broadcasting Service broadcast, no cases of influenza had been reported to the camp authorities. After the protest, the medical authorities examined the men and a small number of cases of influenza were discovered and three were taken to the camp hospital for treatment, the communique said. Newspapeis said there were no casualties when the soldiers quelled the disturbance.
