DIRTY MILK BOTTLES

Big Destruction By Company

More than 100 milk bottles are destroyed by the Christchurch Milk Company each week because they are too dirty to be washed. In the last 12 months the company destroyed 41,372 bottles.

This information was given yesterday by the manager of the company (Mr N. S. H. McCann) when he was asked to comment on an Auckland report about the large number of dirty milk bottles returned each week.

During the year the two Christchurch milk treatment stations have had to destroy bottles containing broken glass, concrete, oil, paint and green mould. Many bottles are not returned by factories and businesses in the Christmas holidays. Large numbers of bottles containing green mould are received by the treatment stations after the holidays.

“The situation in Christchurch is probably no better than it is in other New Zealand centres,’’ said the secretary of the Christchurch Milk Vendors’ Association (Mr L. M. Hall). “If the public could remember to rinse bottles after use and return them immediately, the problem would be largely solved.”
