Working Dogs
Sir,—l have just been told by a local council official that my dog had been incorrectly registered as a working dog, as he merely looked after my poultry flock. The fact that we also keep two milking cows did not, apparently. make any difference. If cow and sheep farmers are permitted to register working dogs for a reduced fee, should not the same concession be granted ‘o poultry-farmers? I remember reading in the “N.Z. Poultry World” that this had been pro posed, and wonder if any of your readers can confirm that this very necessary piece of legislation has been passed. The same journal last month mentioned that “with burglar alarms, night patrols, general alertness, and their own vigilante system, Auckland poul-try-keepers are geared to defend their flocks this pullet season.” I submit that they should be encouraged to keep a good watendog as well.—Yours, etc., P.G.B. October 1. 1957.
