JAPANESE FISH IMPORTS
Effect On Industry In Australia
(N Z Press 4 ssociation—Copynghll CANBERRA, October 1.
Japanese fish imports had already forced two Tasmanian fish canneries to close and might cause a grave crisis in the Australian fish industry, Mr J. M. O’Donahoe, president of the Fish Canners’ Association of Australia, said at Canberra last night. “Unless the danger point on Japanese fish imports is decided quickly, the fishing industry will suffer,” he said.
It was reported from Melbourne that a general meeting of the Victorian branch of the Boot Trade Union had authorised its executive to take any action it could to have the Japanese treaty revoked.
The union secretary (Mr Gil Hayes) said that Japanese children’s shoes would sell for less than half the price of similar quality Australian shoes.
