"The Press’ Special Service WELLINGTON. October 1
Twenty-six lighthouses around the coast of New Zealand operated by the Marine Department are manned by keepers and equipped with stand-by plant and alarms. These lighthouses are listed in a Marine Department Notice to Mariners as follows: Cape Reinga. Cape Brett. Moko Hinau. Tiri Tiri Matangi, Cuvier Island. East Cape. Portland Island, Castle Point, Cape Palliser, Baring Head. Cape Egmont. Farewell Spit, French Pass. Stephens Island. The Brothers. Cape Campbell, Godley Head. Akaroa Head, Moeraki, Taiaroa Head, Cape Saunders, Nugget Point, Waipapa Point, Dog Island Centre Island, and Puysegur Point. The tog signal stations at Pencarrow Head, Godley Head (Lyttelton), and Tiri Tiri Matangi (Auckland) are manned by resident keepers, but regular fog watches are not maintained. It is pointed out “a fog may exist a short distance from any one of the stations and not be observed by the resident keepers, in which case the fog signal will not be sounded.”
